After Installing Windows 8 you also get Microsoft's Hyper-V, enabling you to create and run virtual machines (as long as you're not running in a virtual machine already).
Launch OptionalFeatures.exe (press Windows Key and R and type it in to run),
check Hyper-V and click OK to enable the feature.
Then switch back to the Start screen, scroll to the right, find and click on the Hyper-V Manager tile to begin exploring its capabilities.
