If you’re running XP or Vista and need a good way to transfer files and settings, this is by far a easy way to do so. We will use Windows 7 Easy Transfer and an external USB drive or Flash drive to easily complete the task.
On the New Windows 7 Computer Click the Start Orb and in the search box type easy transfer.
Then click the Easy Transfer shortcut that appears.
The Easy Transerer Program Starts
Click Next on the bottom of the window
Now select the 'An external hard disk or USB flash drive' option.
On This screen select 'This is my new computer.
Now on this screen select the 'No' Option.
On This screen Select 'I need to install it now' to install Windows Easy Transfer To the External Drive. At this point you want to make sure the external drive you want to use is plugged into the Windows 7 Computer.
Next choose 'External hard disk or shared network folder' to copy the Easy Transfer program to it for your other computer to use. Note if you are using a Flash drive choose the 'USB Flash Drive' Option.
After the Easy Transfer program is copied over you will be prompted to move to the old computer.
Now go to your old computer and plug in the external hard drive or Flash Drive and launch Easy Transfer.
Easy Transfer will begin to install on your old computer.
When the program is installed A Welcome screen is displayed just like on the Windows 7 computer. Click next to continue.
Now again, choose 'An external hard disk or USB flash drive'.
After the program scans the user accounts and their settings you’re presented with a general list where you can select what items to save.
If you Click on the Advanced link a much more detailed way to select individual files and folders will appear. When complete click on Save.
On the next screen you have the option to password protect the backup. Leave the password fields blank if you don't wish to use a password, then click Save
The Save now complete, go back and plug the external drive or Flash Drive into the new Windows 7 Computer.
On the Windows 7 computer this time click Yes to this question.
When explorer opens navigate to the location of the backup on the external drive.
Now you can restore the entire file backup or you can chose specific files and folders to restore, save your selection and begin the transfer.
When the transfer is completed you can see a report of what transferred or suggestions for additional programs.
Not all programs and settings are going to transfer to the new OS but this definitely makes it easier to transfer compatible program settings, your files, folders and important documents.
