Remove File association in Windows 7 or Vista

To remove a file association in Windows 7 or vista. (Not adding a new one)

For example if the file ext is .xxx. Let .xxx be the extension you want to deassociate.

1. With a registry editor (e.g. regedit.exe), go to:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts] remove the subtree .xxx key

2. go to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT] remove the subtree .xxx key.

3. Remove the subtree xxx_auto_file (if there is one)
